The device has a control device (9) for controlling elongate linear probes (1, 2). The control device includes multiple oscillator elements, which are arranged in a row along a longitudinal direction (11) of the probes. The oscillator elements are individually and/or grouply activated by the control device under emission or for detection of ultrasound such that an active zone of the probes is formed by the oscillator elements. The active zone is moved along the longitudinal direction by controlling the oscillator elements by the control device. An independent claim is also included for a method for ultrasound testing of a workpiece.
