Two, three or more pulse counters (140a, b) are used with a solid state radiation detector and apparatus having an X-ray source, such as for X-ray crystallography or production line inspection apparatus. A control circuit (160) responds to a trigger signal external to the detector to switch the counter used allowing read out from the other counter without dead time. The selection of pulse counting is synchronised with the rotation of a goniometer or movement of a conveyor belt.
