The present invention relates to a system and method for obtaining a composite video image which allows obtaining a stable composite video image from one or several groups of video cameras located in hard-to-access areas that are prone to receiving vibrations and minor blows to perform video surveillance functions, medical functions, etc. The system comprises a group of video cameras configured for focusing on and obtaining adjacent video images over a solid area that overlap in a guard zone; and control means configured for generating a composite video image for its placement on a virtual canvas which reproduces the surface focused on by the cameras, the video images overlapping at the their guard zone, the control means being programmed for monitoring said guard zones and correcting the position of the video images for maintaining the stability of the composite video image.
