In a storage battery, the vent plug seals the outer end of a tubular wall surrounding the filling opening and the vent in the plug cornmunicates with a passage leading outwardly to beyond one side of the battery. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the tubular wall 2 forms part of the cover 1 of the battery and the vent plug 8 seals the top and bottom of the wall by means of rings 12, 13. Gas vents 11 in the vent plug communicate, via passages 4, 6, with a venting connection 15. The tubular wall may also be formed (a) integral with a hood member extending above the cover (b) integral with a covering hood when the cover is omitted, or (c) part integral with the cover and part integral with the hood as shown in Fig. 12. In this form the plug 8 also retains the hood 32 in position. An acid- and gas-receiving bladder may be fitted to the end of the vent passage. The bladder can be filled with a filtering or neutralizing agent and may be fitted with a valve through which the gas is vented. Instead of a bladder a chamber 57 (Fig. 16) filled with filtering agent 56 can be secured to the battery casing. The gas exit tube 58 passing into the filtering agent has a length slightly greater than the height of the acid level in the battery if the battery is inverted. A vent plug as shown in Fig. 20, which is screwed into the top of the stack and which has a conical portion 78 sealing in the conical filling opening may be used. The vent passages from each filling opening can be interconnected by polystyrene hose and saddle type clamping terminals 63, Fig. 2, can be used to interconnect the cells, the terminals having voltage indicating pins 67.
