To enable an image on a display to be viewed in 3-D, an activation system (300) is arranged to use electromagnetic radiation to activate a pair of photochromatic lenses (306). The lenses (306) are inversely reactive so that in response to a spectrum of electromagnetic radiation (312) a first lens (308) becomes substantially transparent whilst a second lens (310) becomes substantially opaque. In response to the absence of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation (312), the first lens (308) is substantially opaque whilst the second lens (310) is substantially transparent. The activation system (300) includes a synchronization unit (302) which synchronizes the emission of electromagnetic radiation (312) from the non-visible light source (304) with the content presented on the display. Thus, the activation system (300) controls the pair of lenses (306) such that the right eye of the viewer perceives frames encoded for the right eye whilst the left eye similarly perceives frames encoded for the left eye. When the frame rate is great enough that the viewer perceives the right and left channels simultaneously, the synchronization of the frames and lenses produces a stereoscopic effect.
|
