PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an all-optical magnetic recording system using a FeMnPt medium.SOLUTION: An "all optical switching" (AOS) magnetic recording system, i.e., one that does not require a magnetic field to reverse magnetization in a magnetic recording media, uses L1type FeMnPt alloy as the magnetic medium. The FeMnPt alloy, with an appropriate amount of Mn, has high magneto-crystalline anisotropy, but also ferrimagnetic spin alignment for triggering the AOS. The combination of the high magneto-crystalline anisotropy and ferrimagnetic spin configuration enables a FeMnPt media to function as the magnetic media whose magnetization can be switched solely by polarized laser pulses. The FeMnPt media may be a single layer with or without an arbitrary segregant. Alternatively, the FeMnPt media may be a multilayered recording layer comprising alternating layers of the L1type FePt and MnPt L1ordered alloys. Segregant-free embodiments of an FeMnPt material may be patterned so as to form bit-patterned-media (BPM). |
