PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grid polarization element preferably used for polarization of light in an ultraviolet region by having a structure to prevent deterioration due to oxidizing gas.SOLUTION: A grid polarization element having a structure where a stripe shape grid layer 2 composed of a number of linear parts 21 provided on a transparent substrate 1, can polarize ultraviolet light. The grid layer 2 is covered with a gas shut-off layer 3 for shutting off oxidizing gas generated by ultraviolet light such as oxygen active species and ozone. The gas shut-off layer 3 is transparent at a wavelength of light to be polarized. |
