1,241,480. Ethylene oxide. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 14 Nov., 1969 [23 Nov., 1968], No. 55995/69. Heading C2C. [Also in Division B1] Ethylene oxide is produced by oxidizing ethylene with oxygen over a supported silver catalyst containing also one or more of platinum, palladium and gold (see Examples 2, 4 and 5). The reaction is carried out at ambient pressure and a temperature between 260‹ and 295‹ C. suitably by the method of Specification 1,191,983 which involves feeding ethylene and oxygen, substantially pure, separately or mixed together, to a reaction chamber in such a way that the ethylene comprises 86% by volume of the reaction gas at entry to the reaction chamber. The process is characterized by the use of the catalyst which contains 7 to 30% by wt. silver with respect to the support and 0À01 to 1À0% by wt. of Pt, Pd or Au with respect to the silver and has been prepared by a process comprising impregnating the carrier with a solution of silver lactate in lactic acid containing in suspension carbon and at least one of the metals Pd, Pt and Au, followed by drying and heat treating. |
