Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for preventing a reverse drive of an escalator, which works independently from braking devices such as a main brake and an emergency brake of the escalator, and prevents the reverse drive of the escalator mechanically even if a driving device or a braking device of the escalator is impossible to operate due to a blackout or a systematical error of the escalator. The present invention provides an apparatus for preventing the reverse drive of the escalator which comprises: a speed detecting unit which detects the normal direction rotation speed of a sprocket of the escalator; a ratchet wheel which is fixated on the sprocket to rotate as one body with the sprocket and prevents the reverse direction rotation of the sprocket; a pole which stops the ratchet wheel; and a reverse rotation preventing unit which pulls and fixes the pole when the normal direction rotation speed of the sprocket detected by the speed detecting unit is higher than a set value. |
