A mixing appliance has relatively rotatable male and female members having facing helical threads of opposite hands, at least one of the threads having lands at least as wide as the grooves, and the cross-sectional area of one of the threads varying from a minimum to a maximum and of the other from a maximum to a minimum in complementary fashion. In Fig. 1 both members have lands 10, 13 wider than their grooves 11, 14 and the clearance 16 between the members is variable by axial adjustment of the male member by means of the handwheel 20. As shown, the mixing section 4 of the apparatus is preceded by a conveying section 3 and may deliver to an extrusion head 5. Fig. 8 shows an apparatus in which the male member 49 has lands 50 narrower than the grooves 51 while the female member has lands 53 wider than the grooves 54. The apparatus has a heating or cooling means 58. Male members having single and double start threads are depicted in Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) and corresponding female members, formed in two longitudinal halves for ease of dismantling, in Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). In operation material conveyed by the member having the diminishing groove (as shown, the male member) is exuded from the groove across the broad lands into the thread on the other member (see Fig. 7, not shown), being subjected to an intensive shaving action which can be varied by adjustment of the clearanec between the members. By suitable selection of thread combinations, the material may at the same time be compressed or attenuated in its passage through the mixer.
