A thickening agent is obtained by heating a styrene-ethylenically unsaturated dibasic acid copolymer with at least 1 per cent of a polyoxyethylated derivative of a monohydric alcohol of 12 to 18 carbon atoms, e.g. the reaction products of ethylene oxide and lauryl, myristyl, palmityl and stearyl alcohols, such as that known as "Emulphor ON." Acids specified are maleic, itaconic, citraconic and mesaconic, and anhydrides thereof may also be used. The components may be reacted in the dry state or in an inert medium such as toluene. The polyoxyethylated derivative is preferably present during the copolymerization of the styrene and the acid, which reaction may be effected in toluene using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst and with further styrene and catalyst being added during the polymerization. The products are of improved viscosity, as determined on their partial or complete alkali salts, and may be used as thickeners for rubber latices.
