In the present invention, an image pickup unit and a lens barrel that promote a low profile and efficiently reduce spring back of a solid state image pickup element are obtained; also obtained is a portable device. The image pickup unit includes the solid state image pickup element and an image pickup lens for forming a subject image in a photoelectric conversion unit of the solid state image pickup element. The image pickup surface of the solid state image pickup element is curved so that the peripheral edge of the image pickup surface slants toward the object side with respect to the center of a screen. The image pickup lens restrains the solid state image pickup element so that the radius of curvature of the image pickup surface does not change. Due to this configuration, image surface bending, distortion, and coma aberration are favorably corrected.
