The invention relates to a method for preparing methacrolein from propionaldehyde and formalin. Said novel method is characterized in that the catalyst system used for the conversion is modified by the simultaneous presence of secondary and tertiary amines in such a way that the synthesis can be performed more efficiently and requires less effort in the purification stage.
