PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods for reducing allocations to the X+1 level cache of cache lines displaced from the X level cache in a multi-level cache hierarchy.SOLUTION: When it is determined that displaced lines of the X level cache have already been allocated to the X+1 level, the allocations of the displaced cache lines are prevented in the X+1 level cache, thus reducing castouts. Information associated with a selected line is identified which indicates that the selected line is present in the X+1 level cache. An allocation of the selected line in the X+1 level cache is prevented based on the identified information. Preventing an allocation of the selected line saves power associated with the allocation. |
