A liquid crystal composition that has a nematic phase and contains at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (1) as a first component and at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (2) as a second component: wherein in formulas (1) and (2), R1 is alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons; R2 is alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 12 carbons, alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons, alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons in which at least one hydrogen is replaced by halogen, or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons in which at least one hydrogen is replaced by halogen; R3 is alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons, or alkenyl having 2 to 12 carbons in which at least one hydrogen is replaced by halogen; ring A is 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 2-fluoro-1,4-phenylene, 2,3-difluoro-1,4-phenylene, 2,6-difluoro-1,4-phenylene, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, tetrahydropyran-2,5-diyl or naphthalene-2,6-diyl; Z1 is a single bond, ethylene, vinylene, methyleneoxy, carbonyloxy or difluoromethyleneoxy; X1 and X2 are independently hydrogen or fluorine; and j is 1, 2, 3 or 4.
