<p>A device for supporting a pole has a socket into which a pole can be received, and a retaining mechanism for retaining the pole in the socket. The retaining mechanism has at least one clamping member such as a bolt which can be actuated to advance the distal end of the clamping member into the socket towards a pole. There is a pressure distribution pad mounted on the distal end of the clamping member so that the clamping member can be rotated independently of the pad, the pad having a distal surface whose area is greater than that of the distal end of the clamping member. The pad protects the pole from the abrasive action applied by tightening the end of a bolt against the pole, and protects the clamping mechanism in the event of vehicular impact or other unusually high forces applied above ground against the pole.</p> |
