A control system for an exhaust gas sensor comprising a self-healing ceramic material, comprising: an exhaust gas sensor arranged in an exhaust passage for an internal combustion engine, wherein said exhaust gas sensor comprises a solid electrolyte layer, a first electrode layer arranged on one surface of said solid electrolyte layer and exposed to exhaust gas through a diffusion-controlling layer and/or trap layer, and a second electrode layer arranged on the other surface of said solid electrolyte layer, wherein said solid electrolyte layer comprises a self-healing ceramic material and/or said diffusion-controlling layer and/or trap layer comprise a self-healing ceramic material; and a voltage applying device for applying a voltage between said first electrode layer and said second electrode layer; wherein periodically and/or when it is judged that the layer comprising said self-healing ceramic material is damaged, regeneration treatment comprising changing the voltage applied between said first electrode layer and said second electrode layer by said voltage applying device is performed so that the amount of oxygen flowing through the layer comprising said self-healing ceramic material is larger than normal.
