PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which improves efficiency of image reading processing which performs avoidance of a foreign matter. ! SOLUTION: After document reading operation is performed by a reader for reading documents, foreign matter detection is performed at the document reading position. When a foreign matter is not found, the position is stored in memory and reading operation of the next document is performed at the position. When a foreign matter is found, the position and an amount of the found foreign matter are stored in the memory and reading operation of the following document is performed at the document reading position where the foreign matter stored in the memory is not detected. !
