PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear lighting device which suppresses light intensity non-uniformity in an irradiation range and achieves downsizing; and provide an image reading apparatus. ! SOLUTION: A lighting device comprises: a plurality of light emitting elements 5 arrange in a first direction; and a light emitting element substrate 3 for holding the light emitting elements. When assuming that distances of the plurality of light emitting elements 5 from the center toward a periphery of the arrangement are d1, d2,.. dn, a condition represented as d1≥d2≥...≥dn is satisfied. And a reading apparatus comprises: an image sensor head including the lighting device and a light receiving element for receiving light reflected from a reading medium which is irradiated with light emitted from the lighting device ; and a drive part for driving the image sensor head or the reading medium in a sub-scanning direction. !
