PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide thin PBO fiber which can be manufactured with existing spinning methods, and a mat containing the PBO fiber. ! SOLUTION: A manufacturing method of poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) fiber comprises a cooling step separating fiber that a size at right angles to a longer direction is not more than 1 μm by cooling solution that the poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) completely dissolved to a second temperature more than 1°C lower than a first temperature at a rate not less than 0.2°C/minute. The first temperature is a temperature(°C) at which the solution in which the poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) is completely dissolved becomes turbid in white when the solution is cooled at 0.1°C/minute. !
