1. A data processing system, the data processing system comprising:
an adjacent track interference characterization circuit operable to provide an interference characterization output representing interference from one or more adjacent tracks on a current track based at least in part on a data input derived from the current track, wherein the adjacent track interference characterization circuit includes:
an equalizer circuit operable to apply an equalization algorithm to the data input to yield an equalized output, wherein application of the equalization algorithm is governed by a tap value;a summation circuit operable to calculate an error value as a difference between the equalized output and an ideal output; anda tap value adaptation circuit operable to update the tap value to reduce the error value, wherein the tap value is provided as the interference characterization output.
