An accumulator is provided with an air-tight lid e above the battery cover b to form a chamber into which gases are vented from the plugs c. The gases are removed from the chamber by a current of air which enters the battery case through a pipe h and leaves by a pipe i. The air also cools the battery cells before reaching the pipe i by being conducted through a pipe j leading to a chamber k communicating with passages l between the cells as shown in Fig. 3. The final passage l leads to a chamber n having a pipe o leading to the chamber above the cover b. Alternatively the arrangement may be such that the incoming air first flows through the top compartment to remove the gases and then between and round the cells to effect cool ing. In another arrangement the pipe h is dispensed with, the battery container being provided in its wall with holes communicating directly with the passages between the cells, the pressure of the air in the outlet pipe i being different from the atmospheric pressure.</p> |
