A dry cell has a cylindrical magnesium or magnesium alloy anode 16 which fits loosely in the casing 24 to allow for expansion of the anode due to the formation of magnesium hydroxide. The casing is of insulating material and has a metal base 26 to which the anode 16 is connected by a metal strip 18. A carbon electrode 12 surrounded by manganese dioxide and carbon moistened with electrolyte is enclosed in a paper bag 32. The bottom 26 of the casing is coated with grease, tar, oil, lacquer or other insulating material above which is a paper or other insulating washer. The cell is sealed by a layer of tar 40 below which are paper washers the upper one of which has a tab 44 projecting through the tar seal to vent gases into the upper part of the cell which is not closed in an airtight manner.
