<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus in which the document area of image data can be determined accurately by image reading operation for a short time as much as possible, when reading the image data from a document while opening a platen cover, and to provide an image forming apparatus and an image reading method. <P>SOLUTION: When reading image data having the number of lines in the sub-scanning direction equal to two times of the number of lines in the sub-scanning direction corresponding to the output resolution from a document, the luminous power of a light source is differentiated when reading the image data of an odd number line in the sub-scanning direction and when reading the image data of an even number line (Fig. 6(A)), and the document area in the image data is determined according to the comparison results of the image data of an odd number line and the image data of an even number line thus read (Fig. 6(B)).
