A method of assessing sensor performance

A method and apparatus for assessing a capability to discriminate physical objects from clutter using data from a sensor in a natural environment so as to enable mitigating action to be taken. The assessment is based on to what degree the sensor data, or plot data derived from the sensor data, can be compressed by a compression algorithm. A numerical value is derived which is relates to the compression efficiency of the compression algorithm. A higher compression ratio (or smaller compressed file size) gives greater confidence in the sensor performance.
