摘要 <p>A method of controlling an automatic start-up of an automotive internal combustion engine after an automatic shut-down and before the rundown phase is complete (ie change-of-mind or aborted shut-down) includes estimating when the flywheel will come to rest (stop time TS) based on one or more engine operating parameters. Based on the estimated stop time TS, the starter motor can be activated during engine run-down while the flywheel is still rotating so that the pinion gear engages the flywheel at the same time as the flywheel comes to rest; thus the ECU activates the starter motor such that the activation time TA of the starter finishes at the same time as the stop time TS. The flywheel stop time TS estimate may be based on engine speed, engine position, cylinder pressure, intake manifold pressure, ambient pressure, ambient temperature, engine temperature and vehicle age. The stop time TS may occur at the intersection 230 of the engine inertia curve 210 and the combined compressive and friction forces curve 220, fig.2. The invention also relates to an ECU configured to estimate the stop time of a flywheel.</p>
