The apparatus has a linear guide unit (20a) which is coupled with a cutting unit (10a) having a cutting element, and a sensor unit (14a) for the detection of surface of the outer package. A positioning unit positions the outer package in the cutting position. A transport unit (16a) has a transport path (16.2a) for transporting the package. The movement distance of the cutting element, which in a defined geometric relationship to the cutting element is determined relative to the package by the sensor unit. An independent claim is included for a method for applying cutting web to a carton.
