The system (10; 110) comprises an engagement element (11) mounted on a door (D) of a household appliance (W) and releasably held by a retaining element (16) mounted on a cabinet (C) of the household appliance (W). The engagement element (11) comprises a supporting body (12) mounted on the cabinet (C); a striker (14; 114) releasably coupled to the retaining element (16) and movable between a retracted position and an extracted position; when the striker (14; 114) is coupled to the retaining element (16) and takes the retracted position and the extracted position, the door (D) gets into a fully closed condition and, respectively, into a pre-open condition relative to the cabinet (C) in communication with the outside environment; a locking mechanism (18), tending to switch from an unlocking condition, in which it (18) allows the striker (14; 114) to move from the retracted position to the extracted position, to a locking condition, in which it (18) allows holding the striker (14; 114) in the retracted position; actuator means (20) adapted to control the locking mechanism (18); and a thrust member (19; 119) capable of exerting a thrust on the door (D), thereby facilitating the switching thereof into the pre-open condition when the striker (14) is coupled to the retaining element (16) and the locking mechanism (18) is in the unlocking condition.
