An apparatus for forming a circumferential slit in a tobacco industry rod article comprises a drum (2; figure 1) and a rolling hand 3 spaced apart from one another so as to form a space (4; figures 1 and 3) for a tobacco industry rod article 20, and a cutting element 16 extending into the space and configured to form a circumferential slit in the tobacco industry rod article. Preferably the cutting element 16 is one of a plurality of circular knives (7; figure 1), and is rotationally attached about an axle pin (17; figure 1) to the rolling hand 3. The surface of the drum preferably comprises an arcuate recess (10; figure 2) opposite the cutting element 16 for accepting the rod article 20 as it travels from the inlet 5 of the space to the outlet (6; figure 3). Preferably, the cutting element 16 is movable relative to the rolling hand 3, and a pivoting arm (11; figure 1) may be used to adjust the position of the rolling hand 3, and hence the size of the space between the surfaces of the drum and the rolling hand. |
