Efficient highly connected deployment units

Efficient and highly-scalable network solutions are provided that each utilize deployment units based on Clos networks, but in an environment such as a data center of Internet Protocol-based network. Each of the deployment units can include multiple stages of devices, where connections between devices are only made between stages and the deployment units are highly connected. In some embodiments, the level of connectivity between two stages can be reduced, providing available connections to add edge switches and additional host connections while keeping the same number of between-tier connections. In some embodiments, where deployment units (or other network groups) can be used at different levels to connect other deployment units, the edges of the deployment units can be fused to reduce the number of devices per host connection.

1. A highly connected network deployment unit, comprising:
a plurality of computing devices each operable to receive a request and perform a computing operation; a first tier of edge switches and egress switches, the plurality of computing devices directly connected to at least a portion of the edge switches; and a second tier of spine switches, each of the edge switches directly connected to each of the spine switches, each of the egress switches connected to at least one of the spine switches, each of the edge switches and the egress switches capable of being directly connected to each of the spine switches, wherein a number of egress switches to which each spine switch is directly connected is based at least in part upon a determined level of oversubscription, and wherein any available ports on each spine switch are capable of being used to add additional edge switches to the network deployment unit, the additional edge switches increasing a total number of host connections capable of being made by the network deployment unit.
