The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition containing D-pinitol for treating or preventing skin inflammation, skin cancer, or skin photoaging caused by UV rays, or to a cosmetic composition containing D-pinitol for alleviating skin damage caused by UV rays. According to the present invention, D-pinitol has an effect of inhibiting COX-2, AP-1, which is a representative transcription factor for COX-2 and is increased by UV irradiation, an MKK7/JNKs/c-Jun signaling pathway, and an MEKs/ERKs/p90RSK signaling pathway. Therefore, the composition containing D-pinitol as an active ingredient is very useful for treating skin inflammation, skin cancer, or skin photoaging caused by UV rays and also is very useful for preventing, alleviating, or treating skin damage caused by UV rays.
