Disclosed are a device and a method for inspecting build-up on a steel sheet coil. According to an embodiment of the present invention, a device for inspecting build-up on a steel sheet coil comprises: a shield member wherein a lower end is arranged to be adjacent to an outer surface of a steel sheet coil; a light projection unit projecting light to a gap between the shield member and the outer surface of the steel sheet coil; and a screen presenting a shadow image of a surface of the steel sheet coil in accordance with the light projected through the gap between the shield member and the outer surface of the steel sheet coil.
