The present invention relates to a 3-stage hydraulic actuator, and a driving method thereof capable of accelerating a mass with an acceleration piston by flowing pressed oil through a communication part opened when an acceleration piston moves forward. According to the present invention, the 3-stage hydraulic actuator comprises: a pressing chamber (10) having divided spaces filled with gas and the oil in a pressed state; a distribution chamber (20) installed to be communicated with the pressing chamber (10), and filled with the other oil pressed by the oil charged in the pressing chamber (10); and an acceleration chamber (30) communicated with the distribution chamber (20) through the communication part (31) having the acceleration piston (32) move forward when the pressed oil is supplied from the distribution chamber (20). The driving method comprises: (S110) a gas charging step of charging an upper part of the pressing chamber (10) with the pressed gas; (S120) a first oil charging step of charging the distribution chamber (20) with the pressed oil; (S130) a second oil charging step of charging a lower part of the pressing chamber (10) with the pressed oil; (S140) an acceleration piston driving step of starting a forward movement of the acceleration piston (32) by supplying the pressed oil to the acceleration chamber (30); and (S150) an acceleration step of accelerating a mass (M) by flowing the oil charged in the distribution chamber (20) into the acceleration chamber (30) through the communication part formed between the distribution chamber (20) and the acceleration chamber (30) while the acceleration piston (32) moves forward.
