PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform image correction at places where foreign materials exist without lowering image quality of an original image containing places where the foreign materials exist. ! SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus detects places where foreign materials contained in an original image exist, and, when detecting places where foreign materials exist, selectively performs image correction processing out of at least two kinds of image correction processing so that influence of places of foreign materials on a character area becomes smaller with respect to the places of foreign materials according to a relation between a character area contained in the original image and places of the foreign materials. !
