A semi-permeable membrane may include a support layer and an active layer in contact with the support layer. The support layer includes a porous structure including a polymer and at least one metal (or metalloid) oxide in the porous structure. In the support layer, the amount of the metal (or metalloid) oxide present in a portion adjacent to the active layer is higher than the amount of the metal (or metalloid) oxide present in a portion farther from the active layer.

1. A semi-permeable membrane comprising:
a support layer including a first surface and an opposing second surface, the support layer having a porous structure including a polymer and an amount of at least one metal oxide or metalloid oxide therein; and an active layer in contact with the first surface of the support layer, the amount of the at least one metal oxide or metalloid oxide in a portion of the support layer that is adjacent to an interface with the active layer being greater than the amount of the at least one metal oxide or metalloid oxide in a portion of the support layer that is further from the interface with the active layer.
