Class 39(2) [Also in Group XL(b)] In a machine for manufacturing tubular electric lamps, means are provided for detecting by means of photo-cells the light emitted by the ends and centre of each lamp, recording on a tape defects in a lamp and rejecting faulty lamps. The ends of a lamp are examined first and the information stored until the centre has been examined after which the complete information is printed on the tape. Four different defects as indicated by no emission of light from (a) one end, (b) both ends, with or without the centre, (c) the centre and (d) the centre and one end may be recorded on the tape. When the same defect occurs in consecutive lamps, a warning lamp is operated. Lamps 1-24, carried by supports 41 are exhausted and sealed, moved past end-examining photocells 44, 45, transferred to a conveyer 43, moved past a centre-examining photo-cell 46 and defective lamps pushed on to a tray 357 by an ejector device 49. Timing of the various machine operations is effected by cams 53-57 on a shaft 52 co-operating with switches 58-62 associated with relays 119-123. The information storage device 47 comprises a disc 70 provided with three concentric rows of pins 71, 73, 75 corresponding to defects at both ends, one end and centre respectively and controlled by solenoids 85, 86, 87 which are operated to push out a pin when a corresponding photo-cell 44, 45, 46 is not illuminated due to a defective lamp. The pins are held in displaced positions by spring-pressed friction members until restored by cams after they have operated switches 90-92, 95-97 to close circuits which energize solenoids 239-241 associated with letter stamps 196-198 for printing on a tape 190. A number disc 195 is moved in synchronism with the lamp supports 41 so that the position on the supports of a defective lamp is printed on the tape 190. An inked ribbon 201 is moved transversely to the tape 190 and is pressed thereagainst by a striker 202 each time a defect is registered. Feed of the tape 190 and ribbon 201 is effected by pawls under control of solenoids 275, 299 and the striker 202 is actuated by a solenoid 252. Each photo-cell 44, 45, 46 may be provided with a cooling system 36 and a light filter 34. Specification 805,896 is referred to. |
