PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reader that can have a detachable document feed roller detached and that can detect whether the document feed roller is attached. ! SOLUTION: An image reader includes a CIS 141 as a read sensor for making an optical read, and a document feed roller 32 arranged opposite the CIS 141 across a read position, and the document feed roller 32 is detachable from a main body. The image reader performs a read operation by the CIS 141 before a document reaches the read position, and determines whether an attachment/detachment state of the document feed roller 32 based upon color values of a scanned image.
