The present invention relates to a cathode active material for a lithium rechargeable battery and a method of manufacturing the same, and more particularly, to a lithium-manganese complex oxidized material having, on the surface, a coating film including phosphates, and a method of manufacturing the same. According to the present invention, a cathode active material for a lithium rechargeable battery has a phosphate coating film which is used traditionally to enhance chemical properties of steels, such as corrosion resistance, thermal resistance and oxidizing capability, thus the cathode active material has the thermal stability high enough to prevent elution of manganese ions due to the reaction between electrolyte and spinel-based lithium-manganese oxidized materials during charging and discharging of the battery at high temperatures. In addition, dissolution reaction of organic electrolyte due to elution of manganese ions is prevented, thereby ameliorating high temperature lifetime properties of batteries or electrodes and inhibiting degradation of the batteries. |
