Provided is a gap retention member for a glass panel, and a method for manufacturing the same, by which a gap is retained in vacuum multilayer glass without affecting the external appearance thereof and by which positional displacement in the planar direction between glass plates can be absorbed. A gap retention member (3) is interposed between a pair of glass plates (1, 2) when the pair of glass plates having plate surfaces facing each other form a seal around a gap (4) formed between the pair of glass plates (1, 2) and keep the gap (4) in a depressurized state. The gap retention member (3) is provided with hard portions (6) respectively abutting the pair of glass plates (1, 2), and a soft portion (7) interposed between the hard portions (6) and having a lower hardness than the hard portion (6). The soft portion (7) is more susceptible to deformation from shear force in a direction along opposing surfaces (1A, 2A) of the glass plates (1, 2), than to deformation from compression in the direction of thickness perpendicular to the opposing faces (1A, 2A). |
