Shampoo compositions comprise (a) one or more water-soluble salts, including a quaternary ammonium salt, of an acyl derivative of non-aromatic carboxylic acids containing a hydrocarbon radical of at least 8 carbon atoms, preferably acids containing an acyl group of 12-14 carbon atoms, with an aliphatic di- or poly-amine containing at least one hydroxyalkyl group; (b) an organic acid, and, if desired, (c) at least one other compound generally incorporated in shampoos; (a) may be prepared by reacting a di- or poly-amine, preferably ethylene diamine, with an alkylene oxide, such as ethylene oxide; the product, for example, mono- or tri-hydroxyethyl ethylene diamine is then condensed with such fatty acids as lauric, stearic, or coconut oil acid to yield the hydroxyalkylated amide, which may then either (i) be further reacted with glycerol a -chlorhydrin, ethylene chlorhydrin, chloracetamide, epichlorhydrin, or monochloracetic acid in which cases the molecule is further modified and the hydrochloride salt is formed directly; or (ii) reacted with an organic or inorganic acid, such as acetic, lactic, formic, citric, methylsulphuric, sulphuric, or hydrochloric acid, or with such compounds as benzyl chloride or dimethyl sulphate, to yield a water-soluble salt. The preparation of several such compounds is detailed; (b) is preferably glycollic, citric, but especially lactic, acid; (c) comprises non-ionic compounds obtained by the reaction of ethylene oxide with a mercaptocompound containing a non-aromatic residue of at least 10 carbon atoms, such as tertiary dodecyl mercaptan, fatty acid alkanolamides such as coconut acid ethanolamide, p-(stearylamino) phenyltrimethylammonium methosulphate, perfumes, dyes, and bleaching or thickening agents.
