The detector has an evaluating unit (6) having a computing unit (7) and an output device (8). A handheld measuring head (9) is moved over a surface (F) and has a path detector (10) and a radar transmitting-receiving unit (11a) with an antenna (12a). An antenna (12b) is spaced from the antenna (12a) along the surface (F) and the distance between the antennas (12a, 12b) ranges between 5 to 50 centimeters. An independent claim is also included for a measurement method of detecting embedded elongate objects.
