<p>A head 15 for a vacuum cleaner comprises a roller 16 mounted transversely of the head 15 for contacting a surface to be cleaned, the roller 16 having an air permeable tubular 18 side wall provided with an external surface layer 21 (eg of a micro-fibre material, which may also be arranged to become electro-statically charged) to which dirt and dust coheres. The roller 16 comprises a hollow interior to which suction is applied during use of the cleaner. In use, the roller 16 contacts the floor surface being cleaned and any dirt and dust on the floor surface is lifted by the external surface layer 21, where it is held in-situ by the applied suction to the hollow interior thereof. The suction also serves to attract dirt and dust from the surrounding floor surface towards the roller. When head 15 moves in direction D1, roller 16 rotates in direction D2. Motor 22 is mounted inside roller 16. Other elements include elongated inlet 27, mouth 17, tubular shroud 20, duct 25, chassis 19 and outlet port 26.</p> |
