<p>829,726. Filling tyres with liquid. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Nov. 8, 1957 [June 20, 1957], No. 34840/57. Class 144 (1). A pneumatic tyre is filled with liquid by means of a rigid tubular needle 5, having a conical head 15, which is insertable into the tyre chamber 4 through a slit 11 in a rubber valve 6 which is mounted in an aperture in the tyre wall 7, the needle 5 comprising two separate passageways 17, 26 which communicate respectively with orifices 22 and 27, respectively in, and adjacent to, the needle head 15, the passageway 26 being connectable to a liquid supply for filling the tyre, and the passageway 17 being open to atmosphere to vent the air from the tyre during the liquid filling. As shown, the needle 5 comprises concentric tubes 13, 17 which define between them an annular passageway 26, the outer tube 13 projecting at right agles from a base member 12 which has an outlet 19 provided with an inflation valve core 21 and sealed in communication with the inner tube 17. The base member 12 carries also a water hose connection 25 which communicates through the member 12 with the annular passageway 26. The needle head 15 forms a radial flange 16 at its junction with the tube 13 to provide an abutment for one end of a plastic sleeve 28 which is slidable on the tube 13 to cover or uncover the liquid outlet orifices 27. The other end of the sleeve 28 has a flange 29 which, on insertion of the needle through the valve slit 11, abuts the valve flange 8 to be held thereby against further movement through the valve. In use the needle 5, which may be bent, is inserted into the tyre so that its head 19 is disposed to sweep the uppermost part of the chamber adjacent the tyre crown. On withdrawal of the needle, it slides within the sleeve 28 until the apertures 27 are sealed thereby and the head flange 16 abuts the sleeve end whereupon the sleeve 28 and needle 5 are withdrawn as one. The needle 5 may be used for evacuation of liquid from a tyre by disposing it in the lowermost part of the tyre chamber and supplying pressure air through the valve 21 and tube 17. Alternatively, topping up, or gravity emptying may be effected by a needle having a single axial passage, and communicating transverse hole adjacent the needle head.</p> |
