The invention relates to improvements in security substrates which are used in the production of security documents. The security substrate 10 comprises a base substrate (11, Fig.1c) having a plurality of openings 15 extending through a thickness of the substrate. The openings define a frame 20 of said substrate and at least one island 18 of said substrate lying within the frame. The island is connected to the frame by a plurality of spurs 19 formed from said substrate, said spurs being spaced around a periphery of said at least one island and being separated by the openings. At least 50% of an inner periphery of the frame lies adjacent to openings, and a cover layer (12, Fig.1c) is applied to at least a part of one or both surfaces of the base substrate covering at least the frame, openings and island(s). The cover layer(s) may comprise an at least partially light transmitting layer. The cover layer(s) may be coloured. There is also provided a method of manufacturing the security substrate. |
