The invention relates to a procedure (1) for estimating the current loading (MC) of a filter, consisting especially in identifying an engine operating mode corresponding to an operating phase of the particulate filter, especially when the latter may be in a nominal operating phase, a regeneration phase or else a cold-start phase. By identifying the engine operating mode it is possible to implement a procedure for evaluating the mass of soot appropriate to the characteristic operating conditions of the engine operating mode.
