a functionalized poly(phenylene ether) having the structure:;a radical initiator;an unsaturated monomer; anda flame retardant comprising the compound 1,1′(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis[pentabromobenzene],wherein Y, m and n are defined herein.

a functionalized poly(phenylene ether) having the structure: a radical initiator; an unsaturated monomer; and a flame retardant comprising 1,1′(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis[pentabromobenzene],wherein Y is absent or has the structure:where R1 and R2 are each independently hydrogen or C1-C12 alkyl, and m and n are independently 1 to about 100.
