PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a shutter time more than before in a liquid crystal shutter employing a liquid crystal element. ! SOLUTION: An imaging device comprises: a polarizer that allows, out of incident light, a first polarization to be transmitted; a polarization separation element; a reflection type liquid crystal element; and an image pickup element. The polarization separation element is configured to reflect the first polarization, cause an optical path of the first polarization to be bended, and allow a second polarization orthogonal to the first polarization in a polarization direction to be transmitted. The reflection type liquid crystal element is configured to reflect the first polarization incident from the polarization separation element, and convert the first polarization into the second polarization in responce to a voltage application.
