PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detection device that enables any one of a subject image or a background to be focused on even when the subject image is smaller or larger with respect to the background. ! SOLUTION: A focus detection device comprises: focus detection means for computing a plurality of focus detection parameters by performing a focus detection for each division area of a plurality of division areas in a focus detection area, and determining a focus adjustment parameter out of the plurality of focus detection parameters; and subject image area discrimination means for discriminating a plurality of subject image areas which includes a prescribed area corresponding to the focus detection area and an imaging plane and corresponds to each of a plurality of subject images formed respectively in the prescribed area by an optical system in the prescribed area.
