In vehicle steering gear wherein a nut 7 on a threaded steering shaft 2 has rack teeth 13 engaging a sector 12 on a rock shaft 8, the teeth 14 on the sector being of bevel form and the teeth 13 being correspondingly inclined so that backlash between them may be adjusted by axial movement of the shaft 8, the tip of each tooth 13, 14 is tapered, as shown in Fig. 2, from an apex about halfway across its width to provide a part lying substantially parallel to the axis of shaft 8. The sector teeth are cut by a standard hob. The shaft 8 is axially adjusted by a screw 11. The outer bearing 4 for the steering shaft 2 is adjusted by a threaded sleeve 5. |
