PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor memory control device and a method for detecting an unstable memory area which are capable of detecting a memory area in an unstable state unsuitable for a data write, without lowering the efficiency of memory operation. ! SOLUTION: The present invention performs a first data read from each of unit areas of memory and determines whether any of the unit areas is in an erasure state or not, and next alters a threshold for determining a data value and performs a second data read from any of the unit areas that is determined to be in the erasure state. Then, the present invention checks the data read out second time to detect an error, and, if a total sum of detected error bits is larger than a prescribed value, determines that the unit area in question is in an unstable state. !
